Photos document the Empire Mines and the home of its owner, William Bowers Bourn, in Grass Valley, Calif. Empire Mine images include mining structures and equipment; miners in mine cars descending into a mine shaft; miners underground, drilling and chiseling by candlelight; miners' changing room; rooms full of machinery in use; close-up views of mining equipment, including Pelton water wheels; and ore cars and a donkey. Other photos include the stone walled entrance to the property; the facade of the Bourn house (designed by Willis Polk), and other buildings; the surrounding grounds and landscape; views of several of the rooms in the Bourn house; and a map room with drawing board. Also contains a large group photo with a handwritten caption, added at a later date, that reads: "George Starr [Bourn's cousin], (holding child), supt." There is one photo of a close-up view of a certificate of appreciation to W.B.
